Position at the CFDC: Field Technician
If you have come to the museum during the last two summers then Breanna might be a familiar face to you! This is her 3rd summer working at the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre as a field technician and we asked her some questions to get to know her!
ARE YOU IN SCHOOL?
Yes, I’m a student at the University of Manitoba, studying Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology and possibly an Art History minor.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE MUSEUM?
I am pretty much always reading or carrying a book around; guess you could say I am a voracious reader! Recently, I’ve been getting into bird watching, but my favourite animal to spend time with is always my cat Tiggy. I also do some creative writing and crocheting. I am consistently adding to my good sized collection of rocks too – some are from New Brunswick! Much to my mom, friends, and fiance’s…amusement (Mom put the rocks in the garden because it got too large).
WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER DID YOU EVER WANT TO WORK IN A MUSEUM?
Behind the scenes where Breanna is organizing her research! Heck yes! When I was younger I was always sure I would end up working in either a museum or a library. I loved going to museum’s on field trips! You can bet I brought home every pamphlet and brochure that was available to me!
One of my favourite books as a child was a giant, 300 page nature book, that talked about everything from dinosaurs, to humans, to geology. The most flipped to pages were the dinosaurs, humans (specifically the skeleton), and poisonous frogs…
IF A MAGICAL MOSASAUR GAVE YOU 3 WISHES…WHAT WOULD YOU WISH FOR?
Hmmm… I would definitely use my first to travel, starting with a trip to Japan. My second? I’d honestly appreciate if the mosasaur could get me some really good sushi. With my last one I’d wish that everyone found museums as awesome as I do, and understood that our museums are vibrant places that not only make history accessible but are places that are supposed to be constantly reflecting the social issues in the world around us and make the appropriate changes in order to give louder voices to those who the history books have silenced.
HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS DESCRIBE YOU?
My friends would call me nerdy, knowledgeable, and caring.
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE 3 ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
I would say that I’m excitable, enthusiastic, and friendly.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU COULD NOT GO A DAY WITHOUT?
I could not go a day without reading at least a little. Right now I have a book in a drawer in my desk that I read at lunch. A good cup of tea doesn’t hurt either.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?
In high school it would have been history! My least favourite would have been math…and chemistry. In university that is a tie between Mortuary Archaeology…and any of my other anthropology classes.
IF IT WERE POSSIBLE, WOULD YOU OWN A PET DINOSAUR OR ANOTHER FOSSILIZED CREATURE? IF SO WHICH ONE AND WHY?
Yes! I’d have a smilodon fatalis– (aka a saber-toothed cat)- because I love all cats! The larger and more dangerous the better! And who doesn’t want a cat that had teeth like knives?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON?
Early fall; its the perfect balance between summer and fall weather. You’re still warmed by the sun but also get to see the slow start to fall when all the leaves are changing colours.
ARE YOU THE MOST ORGANIZED IN THE OFFICE?
Just a girl with her favourite power tool! Absolutely not! I sit at a pile of organized chaos with a mug of tea or coffee beside me. Personally, I think Veronica’s area is the tidiest. The lab will never be spotless either!
IF SOMEONE WAS TO LOOK FOR YOU IN THE MUSEUM WHERE WOULD THEY FIND YOU?
If you don’t find me in the lab, cleaning fossils, while listening to an audio book or podcast, then you will find me reading a book or news article in the library.
